How to stop windows update in windows 10

If you are using Microsoft Windows 10 as your main OS (Operating system) and you notice that your data usage cannot account for your data consumption. This most likely due to windows update, windows is set to automatically receive update/upgrade from Microsoft server by default, and this will consume your data without your consent. In this post, I will show you how to stop windows update in windows 10.

Firstly, what are these windows update? Windows Update is a free Microsoft service that’s used to provide updates like service packs and patches for the Windows operating system and other Microsoft software. Windows Update can also be used to update drivers for popular hardware devices. These sets of upgrades done on Microsoft Windows operating system components like virus protection, firewall setting, and others.

Why do you need the update? With time technology improve and new vulnerability are discovered in the old system making it exposed to attack, It is critical to install Windows security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks. In the long run, it is also important to install software updates, not only to access new features but also to be on the safe side in terms of security loopholes being discovered in outdated programs. The vast majority of updates (which arrive on your system courtesy of the Windows Update tool) deal with security. … In other words, yes, it’s absolutely necessary to update Windows. But it’s not necessary for Windows to nag you about it every time

There are two ways of stopping windows update, which are:

  1. The temporary stopping method
  2. The permanent stopping method

METHOD ONE:

It is best to use the temporary method if you feel that you need the update but you do not have data to do the update at the current time so you can pause the update and set to install at a later date when you will have enough data for the update. The downside to this method is that if you do not have data to do the update at present and forget to adjust the time to a later date, Windows will automatically start the update.

Now to how to temporarily stop windows update.

Search for “ADVANCE WINDOWS UPDATE OPTION” in WINDOWS OR

IN SETTINGS

Click on the option that appear and open it.

You will see something like this

If you want to pause the update for 7 days you can click on the are marked in the red box in the image above to pause the update.

But if you want a much more later date the click one advanced option (area marked in blue) to choose a later date.

So will see the above settings, click on select date (area marked in red) to choose your preferred date.

After choosing your preferred date, go back and you will notice that the update has been paused till the selected date. If you will like to do the update before the date you can click on the resume update button at any time you are ready.

METHOD TWO:

The second method is to stop the update using “Services”.

Type services in windows search area and you have something like this

Open services and you will have something like this:

Scroll down to windows update (you can just press “w” on you keyboard to go to the portion of the services that start with W, then scroll till you see windows update), when you have located windows update open it and you will have something like this:

Now we will be working on the area marked in red in image above.

Click on startup type (the area marked with blue in the image above) and change it the disabled and then click on apply.

That is all you need to permanently stop windows update.
